A fantastic solo concert at the Wigmore hall.

Pre Concert:

I arrived in London, making my way to the hall early to make sure I knew where I was going, I walked up to the auditorium doors and could hear the concert Steinway being played, sounded like classical/romantic repertoire, I opened the door for a quick look and sure enough there was Brad Mehldau wearing glasses putting the instrument through it’s paces! Upstairs in the dressing room of the Wigmore, the artistes have a Bosendorfer upright piano to warm up on, and with half an hour to go before the concert, I could hear that Piano being played too, again similar repertoire.

The Concert:

The concert was everything I expected and a whole lot more. I was sat in row B right by the Piano, I knew that I was in row B as I had obviously booked the ticket, but was amazed at how close I was. A very appreciative audience was treated to a set of seven numbers, book ended by two songs from his recent album ‘Highway rider’.

Set list:

John Boy, Club Med (a new pieceĀ  by Mehldau), Get happy (“I think I played the tune somewhere in there” quipped Mehldau), I’m Old fashioned, Dream brother, My Favourite things and Old West.

I had read that Brad usually does a couple of encores in his solo concerts, and the appreciative audience were treated to Six encores! Amongst the six encores were three pieces he had played in his solo concert CD ‘Live in Tokyo’.

From this moment on, How long has this been going on, Things beyond the sun.

Hearing him playing pre-concert it is easy to understand his choice of practise material, his improvisations are infused with the classical/romantic styles and he quotes Brahms and R.Strauss as big influences on his work in his liner notes to his albums. The trademarks of Mehldau’s piano style was all there, the independance of the two hands, how good was his left hand??! (Club Med, started with a tricky chordal rhytmic accompaniment which came in and out of the piece frequently).

Post Concert:

I am pleased that I made the effort to stay afterwards and meet Brad. Most interesting were the conversations he was having with other people, I understand that there may be a DVD recording with ‘My favourite things’ on within the next two months? He also spoke about the difference between the Bosendorfer upright and the Steinway grand, the Steinway, being very powerful, particularly in the acoustic of the Wigmore hall. As for Brad Mehldau’s own practise regime? ‘I like to start the day with a Bach Prelude and Fugue’!

  1. Wow, Adrian you were so lucky to speak to Brad and a photo! You’ve forgotten to mention his version of Waterloo Sunset ( which he didn’t butcher!) and didn’t we hear another Nick Drake tune Day is Done? I think my favourite was My Favourite Things – he made it so deep and melancholy. I’ve seen him live many times and this set was one of his best – he never tells jokes usually so he must have been feeling very happy to be there and among friends. Can’t wait for Highway Rider at the Barbican in November. And thanks for our thoughtful and enthusiastic blog.

  2. Mary, Thanks for commenting on the post, it was my first time to see Brad play live and like you I’m now looking forward to November 13th and seeing ‘Highway Rider’. I think that the last encore he did was ‘Lithium’by Nirvana, the only title I am unsure of was the ‘blues’ he played after ‘how long has this been going on’. I had read that Brad does do encores but was not expecting six! Someone recorded all of the encores on their iphone and have put them on youtube, the quality is not great but you can hear them, if you go to youtube and type in ‘Brad Mehldau Wigmore hall’ you will find them.

  3. Ah ha, the third encore was ‘no moon at all’ from ‘Day is done’ album.

  4. Hi Adrian,

  5. Hi John,

Thanks for your comment, I’ve just read your excellent review and left a comment, Cheers!

  6. Adrian, thanks for the head’s up on the YouTube videos – I don’t think I would have been brave enough to record anything, I’ve seen what Keith Jarrett does to similar behaviour and we were in the Wigmore Hall! And thanks for putting me right on the Day is Done track.

If I had the review skills I’d post something sensible about his set with Anne Sophie von Otter on 2 June – it was really hard in the first half as it was pure leider apart from the premier of one of Brad’s love songs ( which was lovely and more recognisably Brad than the rest of the set) but he relaxed in the second half and we had a moving Joni Mitchell song and 3 Lennon & McCartney songs including Blackbird. He appeared very nervous and in awe of Anne Sophie but she is relaxed and will be a good influence on him. Where will he go next?

  7. Thanks for the info on the Anne Sofie von Otter concert,I wish I had seen that one too, I live in Swansea, so it’s not easy to see everything I want. I did find a decent review of both Wigmore hall concerts online:

  8. Hi Adrian,

Thanks for all the amazing transcriptions. I’m from Amsterdam and I went to London to see Mehldau at the Wigmore last year. I have exactly the same picture with him. Please keep up the good work!

    Kind regards,

    Jacco
